Myths and Facts about our immune system
From the "Five-second rule" to "Rub some dirt on it, you’ll be okay”, the Internet and our lives are full of myths regarding tips and tricks to help keeping you safe or speeding your recovery.
More than ever before, we have the possibility to fact-check everything, to make sure that we’re doing things the right way.
So, let’s get straight to it, what’s true and what’s false?
1. Onions around or in your bed will help with your Cold or Flu.
This Myth is as old as time, but that doesn’t mean that it still hasn't its fans today.
The idea was that placing onions in your bed while you are sick would draw the viruses or bacteria out of your body and into the onion.
The truth is, viruses and bacteria don’t much care for onions.
While it won’t do you any harm to keep them close, the best thing to do is sit tight and ride it out, or, if things aren’t going so well, to contact your doctor.
2. Green mucus = You should be on Antibiotics.
This was used in the past to determine the presence of an infection, and it was actually on the “checklist” for antibiotics.
It wasn’t foolproof, though! Many infections that cause discoloured phlegm are caused by viruses, and antibiotics only work against bacterial infections.

3. The Five-Second Rule.
Everyone knows this one. That doesn’t make it real, though!
No matter how quick you are at picking things up, bacteria will still get on it; that’s just the way things are.
There is some truth to it, but only in the sense that the less time things spend on dirty surfaces, the fewer germs they’ll have.
You also have to consider the surface and the food that gets dropped; fluffy carpets + cut fruit would be way worse than dropping a cookie on a hard floor, as far as germs are concerned.
In any case, it’s just safer all around to not eat things that have been dropped on the floor.
4. An Apple a Day?
Apples are great, no doubt about that. They have a lot of fibers, are nutritious, and should be a part of every healthy diet.
That doesn’t mean that just eating an apple a day will help keep you in shape and help fight off infections and diseases.
A healthy diet (which can contain apples, even daily) will help your body much more in the long (and short) run.
5. Chicken Soup & Colds.
Sort of TRUE!
We wouldn’t go as far as saying that chicken soup can “cure” your cold, but it can definitely help!
Chicken soup generally has a lot of magnesium, zinc, and calcium, all of which help your immune system fight whatever’s causing distress for your body.
The broth will also help keep you hydrated, which is very important when your body is trying to recover or overcome illness.
